OHS Tops in Work Based LearningOKOBOJI, IA – Okoboji High School has topped the state in work-based learning opportunities, with an impressive 98.63% of graduating seniors participating in a workplace learning experience. This accomplishment puts OHS at the top of all 304 public high schools in the state in this measure and reflects the success and impact of the school’s Senior Internship Program, which has been a cornerstone of Okoboji education for a decade.

The Senior Internship Program, now in its 10th year, requires every graduating senior to complete an offsite internship in a career area of their interest. With support from Okoboji staff, seniors select a field of interest, make contact with a business or organization, set up an complete the internship, and document and reflect on the process along the way.  This hands-on experience empowers students to explore potential career pathways, gain real-world skills, and make informed decisions about their futures.

Internship opportunities at Okoboji High School span a wide range of fields, including medicine, law enforcement, engineering, emerging technologies, mental health, education, and many more. Some students have even worked remotely with professors, traveled to other states or countries, and engaged in specialized fields that align with their aspirations. These unique opportunities often lead to transformative outcomes, with students confirming or changing their post-secondary plans based on their experiences.

“Over the past 10 years, the Senior Internship Program has been a life-changing opportunity for hundreds of students,” said Principal Brian Downing.   “This program is a testament to our commitment to pioneering pathways for every student and ensuring they are prepared for life beyond high school.”

While the statewide average for work-based learning among graduating seniors is 24.47%, Okoboji High School far exceeds this benchmark. The school’s dedication to career readiness and individualized learning opportunities has set a high standard, demonstrating what is possible when schools prioritize hands-on, real-world education for every student.

This milestone not only highlights Okoboji High School’s leadership in innovative programming but also underscores the powerful outcomes of community partnerships, student exploration, and a district-wide vision for success.  This program would not be possible without amazing business partners who invite our students into their already busy lives to give them the opportunity to see what it is really like to work in a particular field.  It also requires parental support and a vision of education that goes beyond the walls of the school.
