Attendance and Student Success

A recent examination of attendance rates and average grade point average (GPA) for the 2022-2023 school year at OHS provides support for something we have always known - regular attendance has a huge impact on student success.  The data provided showcases the attendance rate, number of students, number of absences, absences per student, and average GPA for different attendance ranges during the 2022-2023 school year.   The attendance rates are categorized as 95% and above, 90-94.9%, 80-89.9%, and less than 80%.

In the first attendance range (95%+), there are 165 students with a total of 786 absences, resulting in an average of 4.8 absences per student. These students have an average GPA of 3.39. The second range (90-94.9%) includes 106 students with 1313 absences, averaging 12.4 absences per student. Their average GPA is 3.15. The third range (80-89.9%) consists of 64 students who accumulated 1496 absences, averaging 23.4 absences per student and have an average GPA of 2.76. Lastly, the fourth range (less than 80%) involves 15 students with 598 absences, averaging 39.9 absences per student, and an average GPA of 2.15.

The data supports the claim that regular attendance plays a crucial role in the success of high school students.  Students with a 95% or higher attendance rate demonstrate the highest average GPA of 3.39. They have the fewest absences per student, suggesting that their consistent presence in class allows them to engage in learning, participate actively, and benefit from instruction. Conversely, as the attendance rate decreases, both the number of absences per student and the average GPA tend to increase. Students with less than 80% attendance have the highest average of 39.9 absences per student and the lowest average GPA of 2.15. This pattern suggests a clear correlation between regular attendance and academic achievement.

Regular attendance not only enables students to receive instruction but also fosters important aspects of high school success, such as class participation, building relationships with peers and teachers, and staying up-to-date with assignments and coursework. When students are consistently present in the classroom, they have the opportunity to engage in discussions, ask questions, and actively contribute to their own learning. They can also develop meaningful relationships with teachers, seek guidance, and receive feedback, which positively impacts their overall academic performance. Additionally, regular attendance allows students to stay on track with assignments and coursework, avoiding the accumulation of missed material and potential gaps in knowledge. This data underscores the importance of regular attendance as a contributing factor to academic success in high school.
